August 28th – September 11 Launch Schedule

(Cuyahoga Falls – August 21, 2010)

Our August 28th Launch schedule will consist of a series of launches from Perseus II “Columbia” carrying its first payload (an altimeter) in its new payload bay.  Artemis IV / “Philadelphia” will be flying an altimeter as well.

Currently, the payload section is being painted, and touch up work on Columbia’s paint job is being done (touch up & cleanup from the August 14th launches)

Last week’s Artemis launch was moved to the 28th for logistics reasons.  Currently, Philadelphia is undergoing final flight readiness checks.

Both the Columbia and Philadelphia should make for a fun series of launches to see!

Looking beyond this coming weekend…

September 11th is another evening / night launch for our rocketry club.  If all goes well, Artemis III “Garfield” will make the trek into the evening sky as well as a possible flight from Perseus I “Eagle” and its (dry) test run of a dual deployment system for high altitude flights.

Artemis II “Bumble Bee” is about to undergo preliminary checks for its September 25th series of flights.

More details to come!

Excellent maiden launches for the Perseus boosters!

(Saturday, August 14th, 2010 Harmon Flying Field – Aurora, OH)

Both Perseus boosters performed flawless flights during their maiden voyages and subsequent test flights to the sky!

“Eagle” was the first up on the pad on a D12-5 motor, and soared straight and true to about 800 feet, and successfully deployed the chute, and a perfect landing by the launch pad area.   “Columbia” was next, same launch configuration, same results.

Columbia’s second flight was also on the D12-5, and made a “pinpoint” landing right next to the launch pad.

Columbia on the pad, ready for flight #2

Ignition...

...And liftoff!

Columbia returning to land...

We flew Columbia again — this time on an E9-6 motor, and she shot up (again, straight and true) to around 1600 feet (give or take about a hundred feet).  Columbia landed near the launch area as well.

One of the neighbor kids, Rusty, after retrieving Columbia from its 1600 foot journey...

“Eagle” flew one more time on a D12-5, and made a “pin point” landing right next to the launch pad.

SO far, these are the best performing rockets in our fleet!

Next flights are scheduled for August 28th.

Hope to see some of you there!

(Thursday, August 12, 2010 – Cuyahoga Falls, OH )

The weather outlook for this weekend’s launch looks variable.  The morning hours look good, possible storms moving in by early afternoon.   We’re aiming to launch the Perseus boosters in the morning, and Artemis booster by late morning / noontime hour.

We’ll keep watching, and will announce the final plan Friday evening.   If Saturday doesn’t look good, then the launches will most likely be scrubbed until August 28th.

Columbia will be outfitted with its recovery systems this week, and readied for launch this August 14th, 2010.

A third rocket in the family is in the beginning phases of construction.  The rocket has been named “Philadelphia”.  The Philadelphia should be completed for its maiden voyage sometime in September 2010.

August 14th’s launch schedule for our projects will be busy.
