Countdown starts for June 11, 2011 launches

(Saturday June 4, 2011)

I’ve started the countdown for the maiden launch of Perseus X4 “Gallifrey”, and the return to service flight of Artemis X2 rocket “Garfield”.

Location: Aurora flying field.

Gallifrey will fly two missions to prove the flight readiness & gather flight data on the new X4 Mark II Perseus rocket design. The Perseus Mark II rocket is designed specifically with anti-zippering tech. The design also features a new fin design that allows for accurate placement & alignment. This is hoped to prevent the “spinning” observed during the launches of its sister rockets Eagle and Columbia. This spin can be seen from Eagle’s on-board video camera (below).

These changes are also being incorporated (in a much larger scale) in the upcoming Helios X6 high power rocket set to make its maiden voyage Late fall / early winter this year.

Will post updates as launch time comes near…

Launch Pad updates – cameras and plans for Launch pad #2

Launch Pad Camera.

On the maiden flight of Perseus Rocket “Gallifrey”, I will be using a camera near the launch pad to take close-in shots of the rocket it clears the launch rod.   This camera angle will be used to study the forces acting on the rocket at the time of ignition, and clearing the launch rod.

Should make for some interesting launch video too!

Launch Pad #2

Soon, I will begin construction of launch pad #2.  This pad will be designed for high power rocketry, and will employ 1010 launch rail guide.

The pad will be used for flights of the Helios X6 class rocket to be launched in late fall 2011.  This launch pad will allow me to become accustomed to supporting larger and heavier rockets, along with the more powerful motors they require.

Details to come.

Introducing the Helios X6 Rocket

(May 29, 2011 – Cuyahoga Falls, OH)

Meet  Experimental Rocket #6  (X6).  Otherwise known as Helios.   The previous “working” name of this rocket was “Perseus V”.

The Helios rocket.

Helios X6 represents my next step in rocketry as I work my way to level 1 certification.  It is essentially an upscaled version of the Perseus X4 rocket, but with many additions which are possible due to its larger size.

Thanks to its size,  it became possible to design Helios X6 to carry a full complement of electronics as part of its standard configuration.  It’s also designed to meet Level 1 specifications, and when fully loaded, will require (level 1) H motors for flight.

Work is progressing towards a late fall 2011 launch date on a G64 motor.  What you are seeing is the configuration of the rocket for its maiden flight.  Currently, it is almost 4 feet long.  In its fully operational configuration the booster will be around 5 feet in length…

More info as progress continues…
